Recap: Shantaram - Season 1, Episode 6

A flashback to Pentridge Prison opens episode six. The detective attempting to get information out of Lin (then known as Dale) seems to make another inmate think Lin is a snitch, which would explain why so many people wanted him dead. Lin refuses to give up his friend and chooses to take his chances inside Pentridge.. but word is fast spreading that Lin is cooperating with the detective.

In the present day, Lin and Prabhu meet with Kavita. He apologizes again, but Kavita questions why he would be opposed to a story that would help his work. Prabhu tries to tell her the villagers don’t want the story as they prefer to remain under the radar, but Kavita doesn’t buy that excuse either. She pretends to, and says she’ll drop the article. But I know this will not be the last we hear of this story, and Lin and Prabhu know it too. After the guys leave the cafĂ©, Kavita meets with her editor and tells him she’s going to find out who Lin really is.. uh oh.

A wary Lin plans to get a new passport and leave before that can happen. Prabhu doesn’t want Lin to go, and half-jokingly suggests Lin have Abdullah kill her. Prabhu is deeply saddened at the thought of Lin leaving, but I don’t think he’d actually cause a woman any harm. He’s a gentle soul.

Lisa and her boyfriend Sebastian seem to be doing well, until he tells her their friend Maurizio is working with a woman named Madame Zhou. Lisa tells him she’s dangerous and crazy, so naturally I can’t wait to see this character. Meanwhile, Prabhu is cornered by Parvati’s mother. She demands that Parvati stop spending her time helping out at Lin’s clinic, and if Prabhu wishes to marry Parvati, then he will have Lin send her home. Surprisingly, Prabhu stands up for himself and Parvati, telling her mother that Parvati enjoys nursing, that it brings her joy. Go Prabhu!

Karla notices Maurizio splashing money around and questions where he’s getting it – and the answer is heroin. Karla is unimpressed, and goes to get more info out of Lisa when Lin strolls into the bar. After finally making a little progress in his relationship with Karla, I hope Maurizio’s business doesn’t come between them. Karla informs Lisa that if Khader knew about the heroin deal, it wouldn’t be happening.. but he will find out because Maurizio is being far too loud about it. Lisa questions how many people know Karla is working for Khader – a question Karla takes as a threat. “I’ll keep your [secret] if you keep mine” – what could be famous last words from Lisa.

Lin barters with one of Karla’s friends for a new passport. Karla shows up happy to see him, but he brushes her off – trying to keep her out of his passport deal. She storms out, potentially undoing their progress from the previous night. He chases after her and calls her “the Queen of compartmentalizing” which is not as endearing as he thinks it is. Oh, Lin. You were doing so well! He literally gets down on his knees and begs her to meet him the next day, and she agrees.

Prabhu gleefully rides Lin’s motorbike around the village, looking very proud of himself. The pair head into town and resume their tourist business, bringing in a much needed cash boost. Much to Prabhu’s despair, Lin tells him they’re going to sell the bike to get the rest of the funds Lin needs. Just when Prabhu had gotten quite attached to it, too! I feel for him.

The Bombay police capture and beat one of Karla’s friends for being gay. He calls Lin for help, and while Lin is wary of the police he rushes to help with another of Karla’s group after realizing the police are beating the man. First, they take a quick detour to pick up some money as a bribe for the police. Naturally, while Lin is off doing this he misses his date with Karla that he begged so hard for. Nobody’s winning this week.

Lin lets his friend do the talking in the police station as he tries to avoid being noticed. Coming here was not smart, but I admire Lin’s dedication to doing the right thing even when it can make things harder for him. The jail gives Lin flashbacks to his Pentridge days, and while showing off his language skills the cop Lin was hoping to avoid recognizes him. After paying two bribes, all three men leave the prison intact. Lin cares for his beaten friend and cleans his injuries.

Prabhu and Parvati go on a secret date to the movies, which is adorable. This must be the first time the two have even held hands. But their night ends on a scary note when Parvati passes out, and when Prabhu brings her home to the village it’s apparent that Parvati is not the only one. I want to see Prabhu and Parvati end up happy, because Lin’s on rocky ground right now.. and so is the whole village.
