Season 5 is off to a flying start as we see John Dutton (Kevin Costner) officially become Governor, meaning we have a time jump of 8-12 months from when we last saw the Dutton family & co. Dutiful daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly) remains his right-hand woman, and ousted son Jamie (Wes Bentley) is on the hook to do John’s bidding. With Lynelle (Wendy Moniz) as Senator, the group aim to work together to benefit the ranchers of Montana… and of course, themselves.
“John has proven time and time again there’s nothing he won’t do to save the ranch.” – Kevin Costner.
Beth and Rip are happily married, though some past memories will come back to haunt Beth – and remember, Rip still doesn’t know why exactly Beth can’t have children. I hope to see that come to light this season, or it will remain a dark secret between the newlyweds. Prepare to see some flashbacks of young Beth & Rip this season, as Beth continues to feel guilt over the way she treated Rip when they were teenagers. When asked about Beth & Rip’s relationship in season 5, Cole Hauser said the couple remains “madly in love” thankfully. However, Rip seems a little lost without John on the ranch full time. With John away a lot in his new position as Governor, the responsibility of the day-to-day running of the ranch falls to Rip. His way of life is changing, whether he wants it to or not.
“It’s gonna be bloody.” – Kelly Reilly.
Carter (Finn Little) has had a huge growth spurt in the past year, and is now very much a lanky ranch teenager instead of the boy he was in season 3. I look forward to seeing his relationship to the ranch and the Dutton family grow this season. The parallels between Carter and Young Rip are hard to miss, and I’m intrigued to see if this will help or hinder Rip’s relationship with Carter. Beth is far from mother-of-the-year, but while she’s busy managing John’s new life as Governor she may not have much time for Carter.
Jamie is in a bad place. With Beth using the photographic evidence of Jamie disposing of his father’s body to blackmail him, he is forced to do the family bidding. Whatever John requires as Governor, Jamie will be required to push through the legislation – for the good of the ranch, and the family. Jamie vs Beth will be a big part of this season, so fans who love to see them go back and forth will not be disappointed. Christina and the baby are nowhere to be seen in the season 5 trailer, but I have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of them just yet.
“Things between Jamie and Beth are only getting worse.” – Wes Bentley.
Thomas Rainwater and the native community will be unhappy to see John become Governor. It’s highly likely one of the first things John will do will be to block the airport and casino plans. Caroline Warner and Market Equities will also be formidable opponents this season, as Beth will have to face down her old bosses once more for the good of the ranch. Caroline calls in Sarah Atwood, a new character played by Dawn Olivieri, who will be going head to head with Beth and causing all kinds of trouble for the Dutton family.
Kayce and Monica are in for a tumultuous season. While season 4 ended with Kayce’s spiritual journey predicting some hard times ahead, season 5 shows those predictions might just come true. A tragic turn throws their lives into chaos once more at the end of season 5, episode 1 – with the whole Dutton family summoned to their side.
