Present day Maximo and Hugo find themselves in Acapulco, as Maximo tells him about Valentine’s Day 1985. Isabel is not a fan of the day, and makes fun of Julia for keeping track of how long Isabel and Maximo have been dating (9 whole days!) because it’s not like Julia is jealous or anything, right?
Acapulco now has five happy couples: Isabel and Maximo, Memo and Lorena, Chad and Julia, Diane and Hector, and Nora and Esteban. I’m missing Sara and Roberta, but I’m hoping they’ll find their way back to each other sooner than later. Hector has fallen head over heels for Diane, but once she realizes this I think she’ll break it off. All she ever wanted was a fling.
It turns out, Lorena will be going home tomorrow. Memo builds up the courage to ask Lupe if he can take Lorena on a Valentine’s Day date night, but it’s a firm “No” from Lupe. Poor Memo. Meanwhile, Diane gives Maximo an “important assignment” which is to make up a Valentine’s Day package… with Julia. Oof.
Sara remains heartbroken over Roberta, and Nora and Esteban being so couple-y is not helping her mood. I think it’s beautiful that Esteban treats Nora like gold and wishes to cook her a special Valentine’s Day dinner. While Esteban is terrible at keeping the dinner a surprise, Nora drags Sara shopping as she didn’t get Esteban anything. Nora and Esteban are one of my favorite couples on this show.
Maximo and Julia have decorated the Valentine’s suite with flowers, balloons, champagne and rose petals. Super fun activity for a couple that aren’t a couple! Maximo calls out the awkwardness between them, and I’m proud of him. Julia admits things have been weird between them, and that she misses being friends. Come on, guys! Admit your feelings, they aren’t going away.
Chad finds a glum Hector by the pool. He’s sad Diane laughed at him when he wished her happy Valentines, but of course he can’t tell Chad this. This scene was hilarious as Chad teases Hector about the relationship, having no idea it’s Diane. Chad encourages Hector to buy his crush some jewellery, but that costs money, so… it’s off to Lupe’s lost and found cupboard. The silver bracelet that once belonged to Maximo now finds its way to Hector… but I have a feeling Hector’s heart is going to end up broken.
Maximo and Julia decide their balcony kiss in season one was stupid, and didn’t mean anything (a lie) before Julia finally lets her guard down. She feels guilt over not telling Chad (or Isabel) about the kiss (even though Maximo and Isabel only just started dating) and misses talking to Maximo about her problems. Their new coping mechanism is pretending the balcony kiss never happened – let’s see how long that works for them.
Hector goes way too far with his Valentines plan.. which sees him wait for Diane in her office while dressed as Cupid. Oh, Hector. He confesses his feelings and offers Diane the bracelet and sure enough, she breaks off their fling, Ouch. Complete with the threat that if anyone finds out about their relationship, he’s fired. I can’t believe I actually feel sorry for him right now, as him leaving would finally give Maximo a chance at that promotion.
Just when Sara was cheering up and having fun with Nora and Esteban, feelings are forced to the surface when Nora goes into Sara’s room to get a camera – but instead finds love letters between Sara and Roberta. Oops. Nora is furious, telling Sara her relationship with Roberta is a sin. Nora fears Sara won’t be able to have a family, but I’m really proud of Sara when she stands her ground and tells her mother she’s not interested in men, and that this is not a phase. A heart-breaking scene as Nora tells her daughter she cannot accept that part of her, and that she won’t accept it under her roof. Nora packs her bag and leaves home, and I can only hope she has somewhere safe to go.
Meanwhile, Lupe sets up a cute little Valentines dinner for Memo and Lorena in the laundry room after Don Pablo reminds her what it was like to be young and in love. I knew Lupe had a heart! This scene was so sweet. Elsewhere in the resort, Maximo and Julia put the finishing touches on their Parisian-themed Valentines room and declare themselves friends again. Just when things are going so well, Chad shows up and informs them the suite is actually for himself and Julia. Big ouch, Maximo.
To nurse his wounds, he steals a chocolate off each guest pillow (as stealing from the resort is Isabel’s favorite pastime) and delivers them to her as a gift she deems cheesy at first, but loves. I’m glad Maximo made the most of the day after being emotionally blindsided by Julia. Maybe he will begin to let Julia go.. but probably not.
