Slow Horses returns for its sixth season with the same winning combination of sharp British spy drama, dark humor and wonderfully dysfunctional characters that has made the Apple TV series such a standout. Once again, Gary Oldman leads the way as Jackson Lamb, bringing his trademark combination of grumpiness, cynicism and unexpected warmth to the head of Slough House.
This time, however, the Slow Horses are not simply investigating a dangerous situation: They are the targets. A deadly retaliation campaign puts the team directly in the firing line, forcing them to operate under pressure while confronting secrets and enemies from the past. It gives the season a more personal feel, particularly as River Cartwright, played by Jack Lowden, finds himself dealing with the return of his estranged father, Frank Harkness, played by Hugo Weaving.
The cast remains one of the show's biggest strengths. Oldman is still terrific as Lamb, effortlessly switching between comedy, menace and genuine emotion. Lowden continues to give River plenty of vulnerability beneath his determined exterior, while Kristin Scott Thomas brings her usual authority and complexity to Diana Taverner. Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Rosalind Eleazar and Saskia Reeves also remain excellent in their respective roles, ensuring that even the quieter character moments are just as engaging as the larger spy intrigue.
One of the most intriguing developments is the return of Olivia Cooke as Sid Baker. Her appearance adds another layer of mystery to the season and gives the series an opportunity to revisit one of its earliest characters in a way that feels meaningful rather than simply nostalgic.
Season 6 also continues to strike the right balance between its serious espionage storyline and the irreverent humour that separates Slow Horses from more conventional spy thrillers. The danger feels real, but the series never takes itself too seriously, with Lamb and his team providing plenty of wonderfully dry and uncomfortable moments along the way.
What makes Slow Horses work so well is that the espionage is only part of the appeal. The relationships between these damaged, eccentric and frequently underestimated agents remain at the heart of the show. Season 6 understands that and gives its characters plenty of room to develop while still delivering the twists, betrayals and tension expected from the series.
With an excellent returning cast, some intriguing new developments and another entertaining spy thriller at its centre, Slow Horses remains one of Apple TV's most consistently enjoyable dramas. Season 6 feels like a confident continuation of what the show does best, while giving several of its characters new personal stakes. For fans who have followed the Slow Horses from the beginning, there is plenty here to keep them hooked.
