Review: Only Murders in the Building - Season 4, Episode 1

Charles, Oliver, and Mabel are diving into another mystery. After the dramatic events of the previous episode, where Charles’ stunt double, Sazz Pataki, was shot while fetching a celebratory bottle of wine, the question remains: did she survive, or is she truly gone?

The season premiere excels at keeping us on your toes regarding Sazz’s fate. The episode skillfully employs playful teases and red herrings about her condition, creating a suspenseful atmosphere. Despite the trio’s initial cluelessness, the episode maintains an underlying sense of unease.

As the plot develops, we’re given subtle hints about Sazz’s whereabouts, with seemingly minor details taking on more significance as the episode progresses. The slow accumulation of clues leads to a surprising revelation, although the build-up might come across as somewhat contrived. The emotional impact of the reveal is felt more through its narrative weight rather than graphic details.

In addition to the central mystery, the episode reveals that Paramount is interested in adapting the podcast into a feature film. The over-the-top portrayals both in front of and behind the camera are entertaining, and despite the humor, the show highlights how much of an outsider perspective the protagonists have.

The standout element is the casting for the Only Murders in the Building film, featuring Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, and Zach Galifianakis as Charles, Oliver, and Mabel. These fictionalized versions of real actors blend seamlessly with the Hollywood backdrop.

The movie plot also provides a deeper exploration of the characters and their insecurities. Mabel’s reluctance to sell her life rights is particularly relatable; she’s not the most accomplished and fears the increased scrutiny and attention. Oliver’s situation is similarly poignant. Although he has found someone special in Loretta, their relationship is tested by her rising fame and the growing distance between them.

The season four premiere crafts a compelling introduction to the new case while delving into the internal struggles our protagonists face. I can't wait to see how this season unfolds.
